All,

I have had my Mx5 for about a year. In that time the road noise inside the cabin at motorway speeds has been awful. It was impossible to have a conversation with a passenger without shouting.

I had read many many threads about how to cut road noise in the cabin. But something that was meant to make the biggest difference to interior cabin heat has actually made a huge difference to noise.

I changed the Upper Gearshift Boot (rubber surround of the gear-stick beneath the plastic housing). The old one was shot and basically non-existent. The new one has transformed driving the car, it is so much quieter in the cabin. It's an easy fix as well.

Here is what I am talking about:

If you've not changed yours in the last few years, I suggest that you do.

Can only agree. It was one of the first things, which I replaced on mine. Helps to get rid of any oil smells too, for those who drive with the top up.

Another thing is to make sure the one way valves (flaps) are still in place and working on the hood drain tubes.
