My roadster has been chewed & licked by a couple of horses which has resulted it paint damage to all panels (apart from 1 front wing & nosecone), stuff that won't polish out, and a crease in the drivers door that won't pop out. No insurance on the nags so thinking of going through the insurance for a full respary. However, looking at £2-2.5k, is it going to write it off? I would contribute to getting the none damaged panels painted at my cost, however still around £2k for the damage. Paid around £3500 (IIRC) from a dealer back end of 2016 and it is perfect apart from paint, just passed an mot with no issues. Its a '96 B2 Ltd.

I would suggest the horseists need to sort that for you in full. Or small claims?

Your Father-in-law's horse has done that to your car, and he's not sorting it out for you? Wow.

FIL sounds like a dick, hope his daughter is nicer! If a respray is really going to cost ~£2500 then I would fully expect it to be written off.

This.

Not even the faintest offer of help? That's kind of sucky of him.

Back on topic, though - I would have thought that would be a write off at those values, by the time hire car (? if in policy), admin, fees, profit, etc take into account.

FiL ain't got the cash, said nags are just mowing grass & waiting for god themselves.

So if I go through insurance, it gets written off, I buy it back and get a cheap fix done as I expect I won't get the cost of the respray from the insurance and the car goes on the insurance database as a writeoff (whatever category it is these days) Otherwise get partial respray done on the worst of it and stump up the cash myself. Oh well.

Also factor in the impact of having a claim in terms of reduced NCD and increased premiums, and (to a lesser extent) reduction in value of the car.

Unless it's an absolute minter, then I'd just suck it up and get it sprayed. Are the damaged panels all removable or is the main parts of shell damaged as well?

apart from the door it is just paint damage. So a replacement door is going to be £40ish. Deffo needs full paint on boot, drivers rear wing, drivers door. The rest may be able to be repaired/blended in but unsure if you can do that on clearcoat (?)

If it's really a good solid car (and it looks lovely) I wouldn't dream of risking it being written off by going through insurance. I'd either keep driving it anyway and stump up for the work, or start saving for the necessary work when convenient, if funds not available now.

solid dint/rust free door sourced locally for £20. Off to revisit the paint place to see what can be done cheaper
