Morning all, after a 5 year hiatus I’m back.
Having owned both a mk1 and mk2.5 sport I’ve now purchased a mk2 2.0 option pack.

It’s in desperate need of some new tyres.

When I last owned mx5’s toyo t1r were the tyre of choice.
Having done a bit of reading it seems the current flavour of choice are uniroyal rain experts. I’ve used these tyres in the past on a mondeo which were fine and then on a Honda CR-V where the wear rate was horrendous !

So what’s the current recommendations and what are your experiences.

Pictures of new purchase , bought for £4300 at 77k miles.

That's a MK3 wink. In my opinion the Toyo's were horrible tyres (still are), the Uniroyal's are ok but wear out in no time (especially if your right foot is a bit on the heavy side). Get some Michelin's, yes they cost more but they also last waaaaay longer than other tyres I've owned so pay themselves back in longevity.
I've had the Toyo's and Uniroyal's you mention, I've also had Continental ContiSportContact 3's, Pirelli P Zero Nero's and also Kumho Ecsta Le Sport KU39's.
The Michelin PS3's have been the best and longest lasting out of that lot and when mine need replacing I'll be getting the PS4's which are supposed to be better still

I had the Toyos on my mk1, they were the worst tyre I have ever used on any vehicle - folding sidewalls, almost no braking grip and an extremely vague steering feel with an elastic delayed feeling. I swapped them after perhaps 1000 of the most unpleasant miles for Kumho Ecstas which have been and still are very good. I've no idea if they're the current best tyre around as I only have recent experience of those 2 types (plus one long trip on a set of ditchfinders that were beyond terrible), but I can find no fault in them at all so far after perhaps 2 or 3 years.

I did have Champiros on an older mk1 and they had the best steering feel of any tyre I've used.

I have RainSport 3's fitted to my 2.5 Sport and love them as an all rounder.

A reasonably priced tyre that will last 40k miles over 8 years, give super grip in the dry on twisty B roads, grip in the wet,
and be the ideal rubber for the occasional track day doesn't exist. If it did it would be the only tyre sold.

I've picked the bogies off mine at Snetterton and pushed them on back roads in the wet, but since it's not my daily driver
I'm not that bothered about wear rate. Under £50 each (fitted by myself) and not from the far east does it for me.

I've had many tyres on different cars over the last 10 years, none have come close to what I have now got in my Mk1.

Yokohama AD08R.

They're not the cheapest, but they're not far off a dedicated track tyre for the road. Wet grip isn't the best, by any means, but it's not unsafe or dangerous. In the dry they're leagues above any other tyre I've tried (T1R, Falken 452, Pirelli P6000, Uniroyal Rain sport 2's and 3's).

Rainsports are incredible tyres but on a car that's not aimed at performance. The sidewall is soft and the response is not the greatest.

AD08R is a motorsport derived tyre that has a very stiff sidewall and a great, progressive feel.

What he said. On the 17" wheel I had Pilot Super Sport, which you can still get in the 17" size from MyTyres. Replaced by the PS4s, but probably not in our/your sizes. Otherwise go for the PS3 or PS4.

I'd be interested to know how you get on with them.
On rainsport 3's myself and concur they are a great all rounder and seem to suit the car well (mk1)

Current findings after a week are;

Fantastic dry grip, really impressed. In fact almost too good as getting the back end out takes a good bit of effort.

Wet grip seems good but only had one dry morning commuting in the drizzle.

Now just need to fit 2 new springs as found both fronts were cracked when we changed the tyres, and it's desperate for a full geometry set up as rather woolley on the front end!
