MK 4 Alarm Issues

Had my Mk4 for a year now and this week it has a problem with the alarm. Go to the car with key in pocket and door will not open on the button or the fob. Open door with key and alarm goes off, get in car with alarm going and car will not start on button. Sit there for a few minutes and alarm goes off and car will start. Switch off and get out, door will lock on button and fob and reopen. Some time later come back to the car and it will not respond to button again and same scenario. Anybody else had this problem?
Problem solved - the car is nearly 3 years old and has done 12000 miles, 2500 miles in the last year in my hands. Batteries had gone in both key fobs, they don't last long as they are always talking to the car if in close proximity. The fob has a very small red light in it which briefly flashes when you use it to show battery is ok. When battery is getting low it doesn't flash and it's really difficult to see it when it's not flashing.
