'06 MX-5 Dashboard/Boot Leak
Discussion
Hi Guys,
First time poster but long time lurker on PH
In February, I purchased a 2006 (06) NC Mazda MX-5 soft-top on the basis that it would be a LOT more fun to drive then my previous 116d company vehicle, and indeed it is. It makes me smile every time I take it for a spin.
However, the recent downpours we have been experiencing in the UK (Good ol' unpredictable British weather) have highlighted an annoying issue that the car has. When it rains or when the car is washed, it leaks from below the dashboard and into both the passenger and driver footwell. It seems to be dripping from a screw located under the dashboard on both sides. It also leaks into the boot on the left side, somewhere close to the top of the boot compartment, although I cant exactly locate the origins of this one. It does not seem to leak behind the seats (Another common problem these cars seem to have)
Before making the purchase, I did read around for common issues and found that you can purchase a long bendy pipe cleaner thingy (in technical terms) and use this to clear out the drainage channels that help remove excess water from the compartment where the soft-top folds into. I bought one and followed an online guide on how to clear these channels (Wedge the roof half open with a box or some sorts, feed the bendy pipe cleaner down the drainage channel and pull it through from underneath the car. Repeat a couple times on each side) but it still seems to leak into the boot after the car is rained on or washed. What else can I do to prevent this from happening, or am I doing something wrong?
I also read that the metal trim on both the front windows that splits the window from the part that allows the windows to be lowered or raised and the little triangle of glass that stays static at the front of the window (If this makes sense) rusts over time and this is why water leaks from under the dashboard as it runs down this metal piece, down the door and into the dash, making my carpets damp. Is there anything I can do to stop this happening apart from just having these metal pieces replaced to stop water getting in? (Cover it with bathroom tile sealant or something haha). Could anyone recommend someone who would be able to sort these for me as well?
I am by no means a mechanic but I'm not afraid to give various things a try! (But having a couple of good mates who are mechanics does help however )
Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated
TLDR: My Mazda leaks - Help!
Cheers guys!

The leak under the dash is probably this http://www.mx5nutz.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=1...
The drain tubes need a trombone brush see https://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=389787

+1 for the dash board fix. Ours did it. I don't know whether it's a coincidence or not, but our centralocking stopped working at about the same time and the locking controller is directly under the passenger side screw. It's been 2 years now and havnt got round to investigating the central locking issue. But I fixed the leak in less than an hour and it never came back. That's interesting as mine has leaked ever so slightly and I've already got the new grommet to replace it and my central locking is st as well. Always put it down to the fobs being completely st but maybe it is the locking controller.Maybe look into cost of a replacement I think after I've put the new bit in
The central locking on ours was a bit temperamental for a bit, only working on one door or the other, but has now settled down just working on the passenger side but arm's/disarms the alarm perfectly. I have to open the drivers door with the key which then opens the passenger side, but if I havn. The unlocked with the fob the alarm goes off.
I tried getting to the central locking module to check the connections but it's too high up behind the dash without taking half the car apart. I have been wondering if its just been a coincidence/bad timing and it's actually the drivers door solenoid that's at fault, but just havnt got round to stripping the door to get at it.

Cheers for this mate The drain tubes need a trombone brush see https://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=389787
Reading that first forum post about the footwell leak seems to lead to a broken windscreen cowl grommet that could be the culprit. I will try and order some and replace the ones on the car. Fingers crossed this will sort the constant leak!
I already bought a trombone brush to clean out the drain tubes at the back under the soft top storage compartment. While it doesn't leak into the rear of the seats, it is still leaking into the boot for some reason.
I need to do some more investigation!
