1999 Mk2 1.8, been running well for years. Has a small oil leak on the engine but nothing major. Pushed car out the garage yesterday, washed it, checked the oil as we had a drive planned for today, topped up (maybe 0.5 litre), started car and drove it back into garage.

Went to start it this morning and can hear starter motor, sounds like it wants to catch, but doesnt.

Any ideas? Video of sound:

Update: after about 20 attempts, and fearing the battery would die, it has finally spluttered into life - initially just one 1 or 2 cylinders, kicking out loads of unburnt fuel, then settled into a steady idle after about 30 secs. Let it run for 10 mins.

Will let it cool down and take it for a test drive later.

Question: Yesterday it was literally started up once, driven forward into the garage, and switched off - probably 10 seconds in total. It would have been running pretty rich i guess - could all the cylinders and intake bits and bobs have been covered in fuel or fuel vapour overnight?

Sounds like your battery is on the way out and the previous starting attempts have chucked a load of fuel in the engine, which was burned when it eventually caught. This happens a lot when the weather gets cold.
