Hi guys, can someone tell me please how to get the cowling off to allow me to exchange the unit on my MX5. Of course I've removed the screws but what do I do next? Also, what actually holds the unit in position? I had an auto electrician out the other day and he said that I ought to be able to do this by myself.
Please explain carefully as you are talking to an imbecile on car repairs. Many thanks.

Which one, na, nb or nc? It's easy on the NC, just take the three screws out the bottom and the covers (one on top and the other underneath) just pull apart and away. For the stalk itself you need to undo another 2 screws at the top and bottom of where it attaches to the steering column and then unclip it and pull it away. I'll see if I can find something that shows what I mean.

This is perfect for you (if you have the NC)

na,nb,nc, Smiler, what does that refer to? Mine is an old girl 93 vintage if that helps. I think I know what you mean as there is a sort of dividing line between what you are calling the covers i.e. the top and maybe bottom sections. They certainly don't want to come apart easily though and the join to be honest isn't that visible. I'm scared of breaking the cowling if I'm too rough. Many thanks for your help so far brother.

NA is the mark 1, NB mark 2 and NC mark3. You have the mark 1 so my posts are pointless haha

So I obviously need more help then. What we're wondering on home soil is how you ever get the top and bottom sections to fit together again. Or do they just clip one to another?

On the underneath of the cowling there are three cross head screws. Two of them are towards the steering wheel end and are hidden down two channels so you will need a proper screwdriver to get up and undo them. The third screw is towards the dashboard side and offset towards the passenger. Once these three are off the cowling pulls snaps apart by pulling the top, half vertically upwards and the bottom half vertically downwards. Use the holes where the stalks come out to get you fingers to prise them apart.

Refitting is the reverse but you need to make sure that it sits correctly (particularly around where the key goes in.
