How much is too much for a CAT D repaired MX-5?

I was just wondering what sort of price you think is acceptable to pay for a 2004 Mazda MX-5 1.6 that has been repaired after previously being a CAT D needing panel / bodywork repairs.

Mileage is 110K. Rust Free

Any input is welcome!

I wouldn't bother - the Mk2 1.6 is far too underpowered to be worth buying, especially as a CatD.

Thanks, I was thinking it may be okay to drive round for a daily for a little while then sell on and break even / maybe profit slightly if I can get it from a friend for let's say £250-300?

1.6 Mk2 engine is 110bhp so not too slow. Not quick but neither is 1.8.

If you can get it for so little ^^^ then what can possibly go wrong ?

I guess you haven't driven one then. The 1.6 is basically the same engine as in the early Mk1 and is a more eager feeling engine than the 1.8 which feels torquier but not really that much quicker. There isn't really a lot in it and for a 1.8 to lose a 1.6 it has to be driven very hard.

Actually the 1.6 in the Mk2 is a very good pairing.

Had an MX5 for a few years. Thought they were massively over-hyped. By any measure, the 1.6 is slow - I have a 2 tonne van that hits 60 over a second faster.

For that sort of money, if it runs, it's well worth it. What else can you buy for £300? More or less nothing roadworthy.

Well you certainly don't buy a 1.6 Mx5 to win drag races, sure. But I bet the 2 tonne van isn't much fun on a warm sunny evening down a twisty road.

£300 for a repaired but catD MX5? Bargain. Chuck a cheap turbo kit on it & hours of fun. The only thing to look for on a MK2.5 is rot on the front chassis legs but as you say it's rust free, do it!
