Hello
I have a 2001, Y reg mk2 MX5.
I am looking for a second hand hard top.
I have come across what I think is a mk1 hardtop.
It has no heated rear screen.
Is this "normal" or is it a sign that it's something else, possibly refitted with new glass at some time?
Or were there mk1 hardtops that simply never had a heated rear screen?
And probably a very well worn, much answered question, will a mk1 hard top fit my mk2 car?
Thanks in advance
Regards

Yes it will fit any Mk1/2. There were plenty made with no heated rear screen, most of those also with no roof headlining. Usually these are aftermarket.

Thank you. The hardtop in question has no headlining. You're quite right. Just a hard shell? Are these after market hard tops any good? I can get this particular one for £300 including a respray. I have seen a few on ebay and gumtree that have a HRW and headlining for between £350 - 400. Value for money...pay more, get better?

I'd pay the extra for one with headlining and hrw if I was in the market for one. Never actually felt the need for one though. The heater on '5s is fantastic and a hard top makes it harder to drop the top on a nice day.

Equally, I had a hard top for mine. During st weather is was a much nicer(read quieter) place to be with the hard top attached. Mine did have the heated rear screen which although was rarely used, I'm glad I had it when I needed it. I hate foggy windows, one of my (many) bugbears.

They are easy to fit/remove. Easier again with a second pair of hands but was perfectly manageable on my own. It was also a definite selling point when I put the car up for sale.

I did find the soft tops are very good and generally leak/wind noise free anyway.
