Mould patches on cloth hood

Hello everyone,

I'm new to the forum.

Keen lady MX5 owner, its a silver 2005 model - 1.8 manual which I've had for @ 5 years.

Forgive me if this has been raised before but I would like some advice about mould patches.

There are grey/green patches on the cloth hood. I think it is becoming less waterproof (is that the correct term). The inside still feels dry after rain but I can't rub or wash the patches away.

Is there any spray or treatment which would kill the mould and rejuvenate the waterproofing?

I assume you have a fabric, rather than vinyl hood.

This is what I've used on my Boxster. (my MX5 had a vinyl hood)

I've also, once I've cleaned it, 'topped up' the waterproofing with a spray you can get from Tesco, designed for re-waterproofing coats etc.

Renovo roof cleaning and waterproofing products come highly rated so have a google for those. The green algae can be tough to shift though. Careful you don't scrub too much as you can damage the mohair if you go to hard.

Is that patches on the outside or the inside? If inside then you might have a small amount of water getting inside somewhere.

Thanks for the reply lazza, it is on the outside. The inside is dry.

I used Dettol! It worked very well to kill the mould, then when good and dry I used scotchguard and it never came back.

I've used some wax in the past that smelt like boot polish. I have also used boot polish with success. NB - do this ONLY on a canvas hood. I brushed it on with a soft boot brush.

Milton fluid [nappy cleaner ] is brill used it on tents etc .

I bought some renovo ' the ultimate fabric soft top cleaner' - it was very good.

At some point I must get around to doing mine. Note that Tesco's do a lot cheaper version of Dettol / Savlon



I went down to the drive the other day only to find David Bellamy licking it, so things have gone too far.
