I have a 1999 MX5 with an aftermarket stereo that came with it. It sounds crap. It's just tinny and horrible. I can only imagine that the original was stolen and this one fitted. Alternatively it nmay be misguided "upgrade". What was the original stereo like in the Mk 2 1.8? Tinny and crap, or up to the standards of most cars of the time? What are the original in-door speakers like?

Its the speakers, not the stereo that make the biggest difference. Standard fit in a 99 was nothing special.

I'd seriously consider getting the door cards off, fitting a little bit of matting and some decent door speakers. That alone made a massive difference in every one I had.

Sounds like good advice, I have some very nice speakers on the shelf that I've been meaning to find a home for for years.

As above, standard speakers are proper crap. The original HU isn't up to much either and you will probably find the cheap aftermarket replacement you have does sound better.
