Mk1's are the lightest & FI very very well. With that budget you could do 2!! Get a rust free shell is the priority, then all the bits are available easilly.
Or buy one that someone else has spent the ££££ on...

I sprint & hillclimb one- cannot believe how cheap the bits are.

for that amount of money you could do something really silly

There are FI cars on ebay already done for £3.5k to £5k

If you are going down the mk3 route then

http://mx5supercharger.co.uk/

and I think Blink motorsport are a dealer for Corten Miller.

Costs quite a bit more than 10k to buy the Flyin' Miata V8 conversion kit then you need an engine and someone to fit it all

For that money I'd advise a decent Mk3/NC - either buy one then sort it or buy a decent sorted one.

I've rarely been on track where a FI Mk1/2 has been able to keep pace with mine and, certainly, they won't be as reliable. Mine is a 2.0 5 speed with around 180bhp after a remap and manifold/exhaust mods.

ETA - really no need to go FI on the Mk3 and, additionally, my understanding is that the V8 conversion is very difficult/impossible with RHD Mk3s.
