I'm thinking of adding some redex or similar fuel additive in my mk1 before a decent ( rare) run . Have heard these engines don't benefit from such things . Any experience ?

I don't think it'll do much for you. I've done it in the past with old cars that have been sat for a while and it seemed to help but those were on carbs. An MX5 on modern fuel that gets used fairly regularly probably won't see any benefit but probably won't hurt anything. People recommend the top spec Shell petrol, Vpower or Nitro or whatever it is these days and a good Italian tune up. At least its fun to do.

A blast from the past I'm afraid. Folks used to swear by the stuff for no logical reason.
The engine designers try to keep oil out of the combustion chambers, why add it?
Oil also has the effect of lowering the octane rating. Again why do it?
Modern fuels & oils are all you need. Use the correct fuel for your car & the best oil you can & change it frequently.
Once the oil is changed & the engine up to temperature then give it the Italian tune up!
