renewing a mk1 front wing
Discussion
Do you need to remove the bumper to fit a front wing? I managed to get the old wing off as it was mangled after a slight bump into a Range Rover, but can't see how to fit the new one without taking off the bumper, fitting it to the wing then refitting the whole assembly as a single piece nosecone. Does anyone who's done it have any tips?
Found this on the MX5 OC site.
Certainly is possible without removing front bumper, I know because i did it about 4 months ago, both sides. Just loosen bolts across slam panel and the bumper will pull forward enough to get at the two hidden bolts. Replacing the wing couldnt be simpler just a matter of undoing all the bolts.......however that in itself is most trouble as the bottom two are highly likely to snap.....invest in a tap and die set, i got a cheap one from Aldi or somewhere and it worked just fine, drill the old bolts out and re-tap.
Highly likely the the two bolts up inside the front of the wing will let go too but no too much trouble just buy or fabricate a new bracket. £8 quid or so)

I've had the bumper off and the 2 hidden bolts (where front of wing meet vertical join to bumper?)can be reached. I think by removing the under tray, lying on the ground with your arm straight up beside the rad. Needs to be done by feel as you can't really see them and have your hand in there at the same time. A small ratchet spanner would be the best tool. I wish I'd had one at the time.
