Miata transmission issue?

Hello all,
I'd really like some help here. I was driving about a month ago and when I went to shift into 3rd gear, suddenly I had a loud knocking sound coming from the vehicle.
-it makes no knocking sound while I am stopped and in neutral. I can rev it as high as I'd like with no issue
-while in gear and moving, there is a knocking sound.
-the sound works in rhythm with the RPMs. It speeds up and slows down depending on how high the RPM's are, so if I shift up a gear, it gets a little slower.
I drove about 15 more minutes to get the car to my garage, with the incessant knocking going on on the freeway at 55mph... Not fun.
I started the car a few minutes ago just to keep the battery alive, for the first time in a month. Started up fine. I decided to pull it out into the driveway to hear the noise. The noise was there, so I stopped halfway down the driveway and threw it into first to pull back in. My driveway is on an incline. I put it in first and started trying to go up the driveway and nothing. The car was in gear. When I started letting out the clutch, the car started to shudder. But the car didn't MOVE. It didn't move up or down the driveway. It just stayed in place, as if the e brake was on (and my e brake doesn't even hold it in the driveway alone). I put it in reverse, and when I let out the clutch it sort of clicked with a loud noise and went into gear, I managed to get onto flat ground, put it back in first, loud click noise again, and was able to put it back in the garage.. with the noise still happening.
I haven't had a chance to lift it and take a look underneath, but I honestly haven't had this issue before. It's got to be something transmission related, I'm just wondering if I can temp or permanently fix it, or if I need a new tranny.

The not moving in 1st while going up an incline sounds like a badly worn clutch to me. The clunking I've no idea but if it only happens when you're moving it could be anywhere in the drive train. Does it stop if you coast in neutral?
On thinking about it I'd be getting the clutch checked pdq.

The knocking considerably slows down as I coast in neutral, almost to nothing. Also, I put the car in neutral in my driveway, let the clutch out, foot off the brake, and no movement as well.On thinking about it I'd be getting the clutch checked pdq.
