Hi, my daily driver is a basic X reg,1.6, wind up windows, no abs. Lovely to drive. We do 80 miles a day to work and back, 4 years now. For full disclosure when the weather is exceptionally bad I use my wife's Micra....We both love the Mx5. Chassis rails are rotten. £800 quoted to fix, to make it last another 16 years I should spend proper money on It, chassis rails, sills, underseal. Save or move on?

How much would it cost to get a new car vs repairing what you've got?

I'd say it's about how a certain car makes you feel. If you have love for it then go all out and spend the hard earned getting how you want it. It's not all about money only in respect of what you are willing to pay to have what you want.

It's a known quantity, if you love it get it done properly. The difference in cost between a bodge & a proper job is not normally that great.

make sure you check for rust elsewhere thoroughly, these things rot for fun. I'd just look for a rust free mk1 (easier said then done) or something else entirely.

Goodnight Vienna. Sorry.

6 months ago I got a nice 1999 1.8s for under £800. It will need sill repairs sometime, chassis rails so far are OK, gone through 1 MoT this year but close inspection reveals they are past their best.

I would invest the £800 in getting a better car, of which there are plenty. Break the old one if you have space/inclination, or sell it as a doer-upper.
