We have a Mk2 which has something rumbling/vibrating at the rear.

It sounds deeper than a normal metalic rattle. The nearest thing I can think of is a boiling kette, or pool balls being released in a pool table. Its there most of the time, but stops when you apply the brake.

The strange thing is its been to two seperate garages, and neither has been able to fix it. The first was an independant mazda place and they said it was a lose heat shield, but it made no difference. The second was a local garage and they said they couldn't hear the noise.

Any idea's before we try a 3rd garage?

Decomposing diff? Is that what you're thinking Seany?

If the OP removes the drain plug from the diff and there are small metal tabs attached to its magnetism or if the oil looks like silver metal flake paint then that's probably what it is.

Just to add it definately seems to be worse on a poor surface. Other times there is no noise at all. For some reason after its recent MOT there was no noise for a week.
