Cambelt change
Discussion
This has not featured in a while, and since it's an important part of servicing I thought I'd bring it up again. I've just changed the belt on our Mk 2.5 VVT sport. Third time I've done this, though first on this car. The belt had been done before though not mentioned in the car's history, as some ape creature had broken some of the bolts holding the covers for the belt and also contrived to mangle the covers too. The usual cursing to get the marks to line up - I can lock the cams with two spanners clamped together easily enough but the crank kept shifting a tooth. Also replaced the idler and tensioner, probably just as well because the idler felt slightly rough and the monkey mentioned earlier was probably responsible for the kink in the original spring. Through my own parsimonious indolence I hadn't changed the plugs and nor by the look of them had anyone else - Denso plugs with a 2mm gap (at least)- I'm surprised it ran so well! Anyway, new plugs too, so some peace of mind now, marred only by having to fork out for a front wheel bearing.
