Hi guys got a bit of an odd one. I have a mk1 project and planning on putting a small block v8 in..because why not. And just wondering if anyone would be able to give me any ideas on a good rear axle???

I'm afraid I can't help - but would be very interested in details of your project... As I fancy having something similar built. What engine are you starting with? I was thinking of a Lexus 4 Litre with Toyota Supra gearbox combo I read about years ago... Alternatively a corvette LS engine. Others I have seen are Mustang and Rover V8s. It would be good to see what your thoughts are, and how the project progresses.

See feef's thread for Lexus V8 build ongoing.

Don't know if it's compatible but people used to use RX7 rear ends for high torque turbo MX5s.

Iv looked at rover v8 and itl fit nicely with minimal cutting to the bulk head and tunnel. Alternatively i was thinking of running Ford small block and building the engine up. And thanks never thought about using a rx7 rear end, provided Itl be able to be adapted

Sorry to pick this up so late. I have a mk1 with a 3.5 Rover V8. It has a 323i differential, rover gearbox and an edelbrock 500 cfm carb. I've personally not found the rover v8 that quick, it certainly sounds amazing but I think a turbo would be quicker. I'm going for a mild 4.6 upgrade this winter, then it'll be nuts smile

The MK2.5 limited slip diff is a surprisingly robust unit and is easily good enough for the 250-260 that I'm expecting my 1UZ to be putting out as stock.

AIUI, the axles are weaker than the diff, and RX7 units are a common replacement.

I'm going to stick with a stock rear end in the short term until I've got the engine fitted, fettled and 'troubleshooted' (troubleshot??) for a while and then consider rear end changes as I consider tuning upgrades for the engine.
