MX5 NA Cobra 6402 – complete failure – car immobilised! Help

Hi All,
I have recently bought a MX5 MK1 NA from ’97.
Really cool car – zero rust – well zo rust now I have replaced all the panels!
Anyway when I bought the car it came with two electronic touch keys and no remote controls.
To cut a long story short, the car is immobilised, I can arm/disarm the system with the touch key, but irrespective the car starts, then stops after 5 seconds with the dash saying security! It was an intermittent fault, it’s now permanent, and a massive issue.
Is there a way to disable the 6402? Are they usually reliable?
The alarm book says the touch key will disarm the system – not in my case!
Any thoughts sincerely appreciated.
I guess PM's if giving away secrets of a 20 year old system!
