Ok how long is a piece of string .... But my son has a MK 1 mx5 and the red has faded but here and there the lacquer has peeled .
I'm asking for advice as to has anyone had a reasonable job done on a car without being ripped off to extreme price wise ?
Any reports welcome .

What AmiableChimp said.

I've had resprays costing just a shade under £1k before and partial resprays coming close to that figure. In initial inspection, especially after I gave the former a polish you cannot really tell the difference. However, look closer and the pricier job is far better - no trash in the paint, bits were removed correctly to avoid overspray etc.

On one of my cars with KWv3s the respray almost cost me a set of dampers ; there was a bit of overspray on the shafts of the dampers, and that was after I told the painters to be careful with the overspray due to the dampers and the exhaust (the car in question had a £1k exhaust system, no longer available with a switchable electronic exhaust flap ; even that got a little on it. That is before I get to the rust coming back after 4 months, something when I have done it myself and avoided.

A friend of mine with a Citroen DS has just been quoted £800 to paint/repair two wings. My local quoted him £300. After soda blasting them to find that the bottom of the wings were basically filler from a previous 'cheap' repair, now getting the bottom of the wings welded up (new wings are £600 each and not the best of fit) he is annoyed by pleased he paid that much - they were rusting up 2 years after being painted...

For the money the £1k job from that painter was one of the best value jobs in the short term. But it is a case of you buy cheap you buy twice.

Throwing the paint on is the easy part. Preparing it, stripping the car down etc. is where the money comes in.

Just to give you a bit of a guide when restoring a classic car a bare metal respray is often in the region of 6-8k plus the vat depending on vehicle size. A colour change over the original colour somewhere around 4-5k plus the vat. Southern prices.

The guy in Evo just had his BMW 2002 shell resprayed for £4K. His opinion was that it was a superb job.

As a contrast, when I worked at Yeovilton many years ago I was told that the boys who painted the helcopters would do your car for £99, but it had to be green or brown. biggrin
