mk2.5 1.8 starter rattle

My mk2.5 1.8 developed a rattle while starting. it does eventually start, but it sounds like the solenoid is struggling to engage.

I checked the battery and it tested weak, so I replaced it but the rattle is persisting.

I notice that the neg lead from the battery is tiny. The dash lights dim when the starter is trying to engage, so I wondered if there was supposed to be another earth strap to the battery?

If not, then I guess it's starter out time...

I don't want to go to all the hassle of getting the starter out if there is some other electrical fault.

Any ideas?

Fixed now.

Just needed to tighten the connections at the starter end.

Interesting. My starter has been reluctant to engage recently. Usually whirrs the first time. Must get a proper look at it.
