Bucket seats mk1 mx5, where to try? will they fit?
Discussion
Hi
So I am considering getting a set of bucket seats for my mk1 mx5 and was wondering if anyone knew where you can sit in them and try them out around London?
The seat is a sparco-pro-2000-LF
Also if anyone knows if these even fit in a mk1 mx5 it would be appreciated, the dimensions see a similar size to the Cobra Monacos that people fit, but wider across the shoulders
Thanks

These only just fit in a mk1 mx5 and I'm fairly certain they're smaller - http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/performance/seats-fi...
So if yours are any bigger, no, they won't fit probably. Especially across the shoulder as the sprints are hard up against the side of the car there.
However for ease of fitting the sprints are perfect, and will fit onto the standard seat rails with only 2 holes drilled (per seat) in the original rails, fitting time half an hour for both seats.

Held in securely, its used on track days
Previously I was looking at the Cobra Monaco's, as I know people have fitted them. However when reading up about them people were saying that they weren't that comfortable. As I occasionally drive it long distances I was looking at other options

Problem I found with buckets and four point harnesses is that that can be uncomfortable on long journeys because you're in one fixed position.
On mine I use one of these full time http://www.cg-lock.co.uk/ , that includes some track-days and Autosolos as well as an annual trip to Italy.
Works for me and a lot cheaper than buying buckets....
HTH.
Cheers, Pewe.

I've got a CG lock and I can't say I find it that great for track days etc.On mine I use one of these full time http://www.cg-lock.co.uk/ , that includes some track-days and Autosolos as well as an annual trip to Italy.

I still find at the end of the day I ache from bracing my self with my legs/arms when cornering.
A lot of people are fitting composite kit car seats. Smaller than a lot of bucket seats, and when fitted with the optional cushioning, apparently still very comfy, even for long distances.
Its what I am looking at doing (once I've paid for the welding just completed on my sills )

Or!
I have been told that this place in Nottingham is quite good. Have all their stock in store so you can try the seats before buying.
They can also fit the seats for you, so they should be able to advise on which bucket seats will fit in an MX5.

GSM no longer fit seats themselves I don't think - they have a partner garage that will, though, but speak to them first.
As to those composite seats, somebody on here has them in his sprint car and they look the business. I'm also tempted by them - I do want somebody to fit them and the harness though, as I'm not confident enough in my own ability. For now I've just had the foam out of the seat in my NA and that's a big improvement.

I have thought about the CG locks before and some people like them.
I was hoping to find somewhere closer than the place in Nottingham, but it looks like that is the place to go to try them out
I do like the look of those JK Composite seats and people say they are comfortable, can't understand how lol

For road use, I find a CG lock entirely fine - I've been using mine since 2006 on various cars.
Keeping it on topic, one of those cars was a Mk2 MX5 with leather seats. More than any other car I've used the CG lock on, I found it invaluable on the MX5. Even a standard '5 is capable of generating lateral forces far in excess of what the standard seats are able to support - add leather into the mix and it's sodding 'orrid.
A bucket with proper support is a game-changer, and completely transforms the car. Only trouble is, it gives you even more feedback, so you become more aware of other foibles, and thus chase 'em...
So what am I saying? Well, imo, for road use, a CG lock and well setup seating position is all you'd really need for the road, so I'd go with the CG first and take it from there.
