Off Topic but Mazda Related : 2.2 Diesel Engine opinions
Discussion
On the hunt for a car to replace the other halfs aging clio and have come across what seems to be a decent Mazda 3 2.2 TD Sport. It is a 13 plate. It is priced keenly and only has 24k on the clock.
However, on doing some background reading, i am reading the DPF on the mazda diesel engines is particularly troublesome in the way it regenerates (dumps fuel into the DPF and if not fully burnt off drops into the sump, thereby diluting the engine oil).
My wife will be doing majority journeys around town i.e max ten min drives with a once weekly long drive of 30 mins and back and once a month a drive of an hour n back
So my question is....am i just asking for trouble by buying her a mazda diesel or am i reading too much into the forum posts kicking about of oil changes needing done every 6k miles.

2.2D engine, especially the Skyactive doesn't suffer from dpf issues - at least our 2013 MAzda 6 hasn't.
HOWEVER! the 2013 2.2D engines in a 6 month batch had soft hardening on the camshafts, meaning they fail between 25-30K miles, requiring an extensive list of parts and work. Camshafts, turbo, brake servo, heads etc. Handy if under warranty, but not acceptable if the car has just been serviced and they ignore the excessive metal in the oil.
70+ cars affected in my local dealers alone in the last 6 months.
