Long story short...

Dad's bought an MX5. The car only came with one key, which he has lost.

Though he thinks it's in the boot which is locked.

Is there away to get into the boot from the cabin or will it be a case if screwing the lock and replacing it?

Thanks,

Tom

Which Mk is it? Most have an internal boot release.

internal boot release in a 2006 onwards (mk3) is to the right of the steering wheel next to the bonnet release. I don't think mk2's had it at all?
Also if he has recovery like AA or RAC they would get into it quickly, even a call out lock smith would be easier than damaging the car.

In some mk1 and most mk2 the boot release is in the centre console under the armrest at the back next to the fuel filler release

It's a Mk1 if that helps?

Early Mk1s don't have a boot release in the console. You can get into the boot by removing the rear number plate and drilling a hole - there are guides for this on some of the MX-5 forums.

If you think the key's in the boot and it's an early car with no boot release in the armrest then you can use something to hook it out if it's on a key ring.
Remove rear carpet on the parcel shelf (roof needs to be up)
Remove the long silver parcel shelf behind the seats, it's the width of the car (don't take the small one off, that just protects the fuel tank/pump)
Get a long metal thing - coat hanger is ideal.
It'll be tricky to get past the metal fuel filler pipe guard which is in the boot, but it's doable. It's quite tricky to see what you're doing but I did it years ago just after picking the car up - pain in the arse!

My '90 Eunos had a release in the centre console, along with the fuel flap release.
