Mx5 Racing series - advice
Discussion
Hi all,
Currently enjoy my mk2.5 but have an itch to scratch which is going racing.
After weighing up a few different classes I've decided to stick to the mx5.
So... There's a few classes but need advice on the pros and cons between each of them. Any thoughts?
Seems that most are mk1 1.6s so am on the look out! Like the idea of taking one and making it race legal.
Thanks
Chris

Some thoughts from a mate of mine who has raced in MaX5 and 5Club championships in a Mk1:
Got too frustrated with the mixed grids in MaX5 (and can't afford to race a Mk3) and the wallet-racing in 5Club. Too much carnage where my budget would allow me to run in BRSCC .
Now you'll either get the 5 minute argument or the full half hour 😱

My ears are burning... (Hi Jezza!)
To add to that comment (which is a quote from me, btw), the mixed grids thing doesn't become an issue for a couple of seasons unless you are rapid already. If you are in a Mk1, MaX5 is the best place to learn racing in an MX-5 IMO. Friendly atmosphere, no deliberate argy bargy, but still fairly competitive at the front.
Buying a car already done is the cheapest way - you can get a car that's ready to go for £4-5k - but I totally understand the fun factor from tinkering / doing it yourself.
Where are you based, Chris?

Max5 for sure. I'll be doing a couple of rounds this year with my limited budget. The whole grid are a really great bunch of guys and the MK3/MK1 split is fine as unless it's wet you don't tend to mingle too much unless being lapped by a MK3. The racing is close but polite. There are a couple of MK4s running this year (Rodders and Halliwell) as well but I don't think they can take points this year.
BRSCC is too much like bumper cars for me. I know a few chaps who run in this series and they seem to spend a lot more on engines and bodywork through a season.

Hi there,
I raced with the guys above for a year in Max 5 and have then done a year in 5 Club so will chuck in my 2 pence worth.
Enjoyed both massively, Max5 was great, smaller grid of Mk1s, we had a good close bunch near the front each round but there was a lot of respect between the drivers, you did get the odd Mk3 in the way from time to time but it wasn't a massive issue. Probably the best place to start if you haven't raced before.
5 Club has a bigger grid and you are up against some guys that have been doing it for years and years, but you can be competitive with a modest budget and doing it on your own without chucking as much money at it as sometimes you are lead to believe. The racing is a bit firmer but very exciting being in a pack of 10+ cars nose to tail. I will be there next year.
BRSCC is the biggest in terms of grids, but I haven't raced with them so can't comment. Some of the guys dip in and out of all 3 championships, regulations are very similar bar tyres and some shock absorbers.
Depending on where you're based there will be someone to help out and guide you, I'm in East Anglia if that helps.
