Falken Ziex ZE914 (I have these at the moment and they are OK, but will the £40 extra a tyre for the others get me a better tyre?)

I went for Avon ZZ5 tyres on my Mk3. The difference over the Dunlop's that were on it are night and day.

Highly recommended. thumbup

For my mk3 I have a set of 16s with winters on, and for summer have a set of Federal 595 RSRs - they have brilliant grip when hot and on track, and are still good in general road use - I had them on right through last winter (although I do have other cars I can use if it is especially bad), but I have had no worries about performance on the damp/mucky b-roads locally...

Price-wise they are pretty close, if not cheaper than many of the options you've listed. Also consider the Nankang NS-2R as a similar option.

Michelin PS3 is a good call. I think I was thinking of that when I saw the numbers conti tyres and went down the wrong road.

I can't find the Federals in a 205/45/17. I know I could probably go to a 215. But I don't want to. :P

Anyway the brand new wheels turned up and 2 had dings in. So took them back today. Wait another week for replacements.

(I buckled one of the original 17" alloys, so we've upgraded to something better and cheaper than a replacement OE wheel.)

I've had Kumho E39's, Continental Contisportcontact 3's, Uniroyal Rainsport 3's and Toyo TR1's. I preferred Continentals then the Uniroyals or the Kumhos (can't decide which) then the Toyo's. They were all good tyres and I'm not sure the Continentals were worth the premium over the others despite me preferring them

Currently running AD08R's, as a do it all tyre, on my Mk1 and they've far exceeded my expectations.

Have them on my s/c Mk1 and can't praise them highly enough as all-rounders.
We've done Autosolos, soaking wet trackdays as well as many touring miles both wet and dry and have never found them lacking.
Cheers, Pewe.

Thanks for the replies chaps. The heart wants the Yoko's but the brain says the Michelin PS3 is probably the more sensible option. The car is better than the driver on track already. So a more road biased tyre for the wife's driving seems sensible. Cheaper too.

Yes I think Munter is more looking at road tyres. For track he'd be better off with Dunlop Direzza DZ03 than the Federals though wink

For road use the new Michelin Pilot Sport 4 would be a good choice, then again Goodyear have brought out the new F1 also.

I am getting some Michelin Pilot Super Sport for the front this weekend, the existing ( poor ) OEM Bridgestones have lost a lot of grip compared to the new back ones so the car understeers. The PSS should fix this.

Here they are, ran them around to Waitrose at Edenbridge a few miles away to get some beers and scruff them in gently

hopefully the car will be less understeery now.

Anyone tried Uniroyal Rainsport 3 tyres on their MX5? They're the current flavour of choice MSA list 1A tyre & am thinking of these on a MK1 MX5 that I'm going to be sprinting & hillclimbing this year.

I have on my NC, very good wet tyre but on one particular day when there was enormous amounts of rain it aquaplaned about three times, each time was very brief but each time it tried to spin in the same direction pulling of to the left. Not sure if it's to do with the tread pattern but was a bit disconcerting at the time. Every other time I've been out they have been very very good in the wet. In the dry they don't match up to the Continental conticontactsport sport 3's I had and to be honest aren't much if any better than Kumho KU39's I had.

Well based on this thread, after I get the last 2 wheels back yesterday..(this was harder than I expected when ordering 4 off the shelf wheels). I orders 4 x Michelin Pilot Super Sport. Because..well why buy anything less. smile
