For me this has become a moot question. The 1.8 S-Special I bought in the end definitely has a working LSD! You have to be pretty brutal to break traction - more so than in my old RS-Ltd - but you can pick your angle and hold it there if you do actually manage to get the rear wheels spinning.

I think you may be right. I guess my point is you cannot always tell which diff an mx5 has by the model. The only way to be sure is to have a look.
