As per the title, did every JDM mk1 1.8 leave the factory with a Torsen diff or is just the special editions?

I believe they either come with an open diff or torsen the vlsd was the 1.6 only. Don't think many imports came with open diffs if any at all.

There are plenty of poverty spec JDM cars around with no PAS, EW, AC and no LSD. Pretty easy to spot though (and some do have the LSD anyway...).

Now I'm really confused. I thought any JDM car would have an LSD - viscous if it was a 1.6; Torsen if it was a 1.8?

To be honest, while I say there are plenty of poverty spec JDM cars, not many seem to make it over here and they are very obvious to spot so it probably wouldn't be a problem.

Most (all ?)Ltd Editions had one and many Japs specified one but certainly not all JDM 1.8s

Plus many have been removed by now.

Does the linked page answer the question? Doesn't look like it to me. It tells you which difs were supplied at different times and how to identify them but It doesn't tell you if your poverty spec 1997 Eunos has an LSD or not... It could still be open or Type 2 Torsen.

For me this has become a moot question. The 1.8 S-Special I bought in the end definitely has a working LSD! You have to be pretty brutal to break traction - more so than in my old RS-Ltd - but you can pick your angle and hold it there if you do actually manage to get the rear wheels spinning. smile

I think you may be right. I guess my point is you cannot always tell which diff an mx5 has by the model.

The only way to be sure is to have a look.
