Mk2 owner here, but help me settle an argument with a neighbour that's just bought a Mk3. It seems the needle on his oil gauge jumps around (from the middle up, rather from the middle down) when he boots it. In my Mk2, my oil (pressure) gauge is rock solid whatever im doing (I know ours only move when there is catastrophic oil loss). He reckons its normal for an oil pressure gauge to bob around when you boot a car because "the oil pump is pumping faster"...

1) Is the Mk3 gauge a pressure gauge, or a temp gauge?
2) If pressure, would you expect it to move around under acceleration? Is it an on/off gauge like a Mk2, or does it give a real-time report of pressure?
3) If temp, does it sound like a faulty sensor?

I know what you mean about the Mk2. The Mk3 gauge behaves very differently.

Skuzzle posted something about this on Nutz a while back. The gist of it is that the oil gauge rises and falls with the revs, and doesn't take account of the oil sensors. He had the sensors unplugged/non-functional and it still worked the same as normal.

What he said tallies with the Mk3 & Mk3.5 that've owned.

The one in my Mk1 is a fake one. But I have an oil pressure and temp gauge in my Focus. Once up to temp, the gauge stays bang on in the middle, but the pressure gauge rises as the engine speed increases.

No idea if it's a true reading or simulated by the ECU.
