Mk1 drive shaft puzzle

I wonder if anyone has come across this before, the near side rear hub nut is not fully engaged by the cv joint thread. There is about 3-4 mm of the nut sleeve projecting beyond the end of the cv joint thread.

The nut was fully tight and has obviously been this way for some time without issue. But it can're be right can it?

The off side nut is as you would expect with a couple of threads projecting through the nut.

The cv seems fully home in the hub carrier and moves freely with the hub nut removed. Are there Cvs with a shorter thread?

Car is a 95 1.8 if it makes a difference.
