So I've just found this front diff seal fitted backwards after a discovering a whine on my partner's 2008 MX5 at 49k.

The seal was fitted by the dealer on 1st May 2014 who have just refused to correct this under warranty even though I've had two stories in two days from the same service centre (one claiming 1 year and the other 2 years). It progresses, as they say had the car been driven in (sans differential oil) they would have worked something out but now I've pulled it down this far that's null and void.

Clearly a £250 bill to fit another £14 seal is ott especially 14 months down the road.

It was booked in for its 7th service Thursday but they have left me no option of assistance. I think I'll be going to the Japanese specialist instead.

Even had the diff seal been replaced a second time at the dealer they would never of admitted incorrectly fitting it last time? A further £250 out of pocket for yet another backward seal?

Just hoping there's been no further damage to the internals.

Trading standards?

Has it not been leaking oil from day one?

Been to where its normally reverse parked on an incline and nothing found although i would expect it have leaked more like this. Seems it has only been losing tiny amounts when running and has splashed it on the underside of the car. It's gone unnoticed until it started making the noise unfortunately.

If they employ the kind of chimp that could fit a diff seal the wrong way round they are probably best not to be trusted with your servicing anyway. Do you want the same guy fitting your brake pads?

Where are you based? There are a few good mk3 specialists out there that would be able to fix it if you have no joy through the dealer and be able to service your car.
