HELP ! knocking noise coming from my MX5
Discussion
Hiya guys - I have a '91 Mazda eunos 1.6 auto that has decided to give me a new noise to worry about !! The other creaks / squeaks and general grumbles I can deal with seeing as she is 24 years young this year - BUT, and this is a big but (!) she now has decided that when she is in reverse or drive and I turn the steering left / right or even go forwards in drive (I don't do forwards in reverse for all the usual reasons !!) she makes this awful rattle - it's not a knock or a bang - it sounds like there are a bag of loose bolts rattling around - any ideas as taking it to the garage to be told it could be this or could be that and charging me an arm and a leg to look at the could be's is not an option right now - any pointers / thoughts greatly appreciated - if you need anymore info let me know and I'll try my best. Thanks :-)
A good thing to check first for rattling sounds are the various heat shields around the exhaust manifold , on the catalytic converter and wherever else they are, although if it makes those noises just when turning the steering then perhaps not.
Have you tried listening in the engine bay while someone else turns the steering or revs it? Perhaps the source of the noise will become clearer or can be narrowed down a bit.
