Whats the best induction kit for my Mk3 NC1 MX5?
Discussion
As the titles says, whats the best kit?
Ive heard the K&N 57i is no good, ive been looking at the Pipercross induction kit but cant find any reviews or videos of how it performs. I don't wanna shell out £200+ and not have a decent noise.
I currently have a aftermarket Cobalt backbox which isn't too loud at all, and just want some induction roar and for it to breathe abit more freely really.
Any ideas/help will be appreciated
Cheers

I have the K&N Apollo fit to my 2.0L NC. Does a good job but adds very little in the way of induction roar. Open cone filters are prone to heat soak so although you may get the roar your after, you may also find the car is actually down on power once fitted. You could perhaps try on of the kits that locate the cone filter down in the front bumper grill suck as the skuzzle kit. I have no experience of these kits so can't comment on the noise. I do know that this type of kit requires removal of the front bumper for fitting though.
If you get one then go for the Skuzzle or AEM/Mazdaspeed.
I'm really not convinced by them mind, not for this car, this is one vehicle where they don't do much at all, don't even sound that good (the long arm intake on the MX5 sounds pretty dull and droney, nothing like the similar design on the Honda S2000 which somehow manages to sound completely different).
I had an AEM and went back to the stock airbox with a K&N panel filter, selling the aftermarket intake. That the airbox and stock panel filter is largely retained for the 270bhp plus BBR turbo conversions should tell you a lot about how restrictive the stock airbox isn't!
Some will tell you that an intake like the AEM or Skuzzle design will lower intake air temperature when on the road or track, whilst it might, I am yet to be convinced that this results in much more power either on a stock car or a tuned one, assuming its mapped well. Heatsoak when moving isn't that bad, the stock intake is essentially a cold air intake by design as it sources all air outside of the engine bay.

I agree with the previous comments. I have a 2007 NC with the KN filter and a ILmotorsport race back box exhaust. The noise is nice (not irritating and not particularly loud) at high revs. The engine definitely breathes better and has a bit more punch - driven hard. I don't think you can get a great sound from this engine but small improvements can be made.
[quote=DirtyJigsaw]Thank you all for the replies. I heard about the Skuzzle kit tbh and yeah, front bumper needs to be removed. And I am finding it hard to find the MazdaSpeed one tbh.

Again this kit requires bumper removal.
