Similar width tyres (NS2-R rather than RSR) on 8" caused me problems on the rear arches with lowering springs. The edge of the tyre rubbed. I've yet to see anyone else have an issue though.OTOH, 16x8 works fine for me.
I would go 17x8 215/45, should be ideal if you would rather avoid arch rolls etc, but get a good alignment done. As shogun over ET40 for an 8" should be fine.
With an alignment, on road tyres you can go 30mm further out under the arches without rubbing;
I'm running 235/40 on a 17x9 et 49, lowered about an inch on Tein Street Flex coilovers, front camber is 2.0 and rear 1.5, and it doesn't rub at all. They are a closer rolling radius to 205/45 than 215/45 is, and believe it or not having had them a year, I do not think it is overtyred at all.
Though outside of trackday tyres 235/40 is not an easy size to find which is why I'm not suggesting them, and probably why you don't hear much about larger tyres on MX5s here, compared to reading around on a US site like miata.net where you regularly see 245/40s on track cars (very easy size to find as it happens).

Partly the wheels I wanted. Because mine is an auto (I expect I'll get it for this too.. makes 235s sound even sillier!), though I know they are popular size, I read into things at the time 215/45 would be to much of an increase in rolling radius making acceleration slower than it already is. So why not keep the standard tyre size? Without going into detail about why etc., I wanted to change the wheels and didn't want 7" width.
I should have explained why in the first place than trying to put it into some sort of context, badly; I admit that website is the only yardstick I based choosing wide tyres on. Unnecessary, yes, they are for the road, but it isn't as if it's unheard of.
All that said I will be changing to 17x8 and 215s once these are worn!
