Hi Guys
The answer to this question will be make or break for me.
First of i'm sick of my boring Astra been thinking of getting something more sporty, something that i actually LIKE, rather than the 'norn'.
Narrowed it down to Hyundai Coupe and the Mx5.
Hyundai= Two small seat in the back, bit of a squash....mmm
Mx5= just two seats, but its usually just me in it going to work,Mrs has a People Carrier[ nice and sensible so we are covered there]
I love both these cars but think i'd love the exitement of the Mx5 more!
Sorry for rambling, will get to the point!
BOOT SIZE: Some Guys play Golf,Not Me, I'm a Metal Detectorist
I'm really concerned as i hear the Mx boot is very small? I have never seen one for real just pictures on the net, or seen one from a distance.
My Detector Measures 1250mm in Length, will it fit???
I love my Hobby and as much as i love the look of the Mx5 it would be usless to me if the Detector wouldn't go in the boot! As i said, make or break.
If it won't fit it would mean i would have to settle for second best[Hyundai Coupe] I would be ok with this as its niceand i would buy one.....BUT its not and Mx5.....
Fingers crossed.........
.

I can get a set of golf clubs in the boot of my Mk1. I have to take to woods out of the bag and put them diagonally though.

Hyundai Coupe looks nice but it's just a car. It's not even remotely a rival to an MX5. More of a (cheap) rival to coupes such as Audi TT.
You don't buy an MX5 for it's practicality (though they are far more practical than people give them credit for), you buy them because they are great fun to drive.
I can fit a full set of golf clubs in my car if that helps. I just have to take the driver out of the bag and put that in separately. All the other clubs can stay in the bag and still fit. That's in the Mk2.5 I have now and in the old Mk1 I had before. Mk2/2.5 has a bit more space in the boot due to the spare wheel being sunk into the base of the boot (which does make the boot shallower) and the battery being sunk into a well at the side of the boot.

Battery in the boot!
Just goes to show, I have NO clue about this car...lol.
Will have to do more research...so hard to make up my mind..Funny thing is, when I look around at an attempt to choose a different car, all i see are boring looking box's on wheels, they are all starting to look the same..Audi A4,Golf,Focus,Seat,...anything a bit different/sporty...lol
Cheers Guys

An example of the boot size. 2001 Mk2.5 (same from 1998 to 2005).

Hi
If your metal detector handle is too long for an MX boot - cut the handle shorter! Buy the MX - they are great cars!!!

I owned a Hyundai Coupe, I replaced it with an MX5, I then bought another MX5 when it came time for a new car - just get the MX5 and work around the issues with a big silly grin on your face. It's amazing what you can get in a car with unlimited head room wink

I'm sure you can get metal detectors with folding handles?

I miss my 5's frown

Of course the Mk 3 or NC as it's known has quite a bit more boot space, was surprised when I swapped so took my wife for a Scottish holiday in it. All our luggage went in the boot.
And if you are going to be ageist you young whippersnappers you have a lot of catching up to do, 76 this year & still enjoying my MX5 as it should be enjoyed.

From what I've seen the Mk3 boot is bigger but the opening is smaller. I'm not sure I'd get my full golf bag with clubs in a Mk3. Could someone out there give it a go to see?

53 here, and I take mine fishing.
I also have a land cruiser, but in the summer, I like turning up to the lake with the roof down,I have adapted, and re arranged my stuff to fit in my MX5.
You have to remember the boot is the same size, roof up or down.
For a roadster, it has a big boot,IMO

Indeed. I took my Mk1 to the Le Mans classic in 2012, though I did use the rear shelf too. Got in a tent, sleeping bags, sleeping rolls, bags with clothes etc. Managed to get two boxes of wine in on the way back too.

The boot might stay the same size but the passenger seat area is massive with the top down wink

Many years ago I had a FIAT X1/9. I got two 8 foot surfbords in the passenger seat for the short trip form the hire shop to the beach. They did stick out a bit though. hehe
