MK2 1.8 MMX5 starts then stops, not MAF any ideas?

Hi I have just bought a 2001 1.8 MX5 which has a starting problem. it starts but then dies after a split second. If I unplug the MAF it runs and drives but very rich. I replaced the MAF with a known working one but that worked for 5 mins then died again. pumping the gas doesn't help, it really only works without the MAF. I saw some mention of camshaft and crankshaft sensor, could these need replacing too?

Get an OBDII reader and see what the ECU has to say. Mk2.5 will tell you about most sensor problems. Readers are cheap off eBay.

I had a similar problem which turned out to be camshaft position sensor, that then threw a MAF error too. A new unit and problem went away. Was diagnosed by a OBI reader thingy as suggested.
