Hi guys,

I almost bought a Mk3 Sport around August last year on finance, but picked up a new Mini Cooper S instead.

Looking at the new Mk4 MX5, I really fancy one.

Is there a guestimate release date at all yet? Or has anyone spoke to dealers about ordering them or deposits and the like?

I haven't even seen confirmation of the engines that will be available in UK yet. They will be trying to offload the backlog of Mk3.5s before they start taking deposits on the Mk4.

AH, it was a 3.5 I almost ordered sorry, not a 3. I'd priced up a red and black Sport but was told by people at work (I get a car allowance) that I wouldn't be allowed to have a convertible - even a hard top.

Couldn't get an answer from the company regarding the issue as this was during a TUPE period so communications were a bit AWOL, they simply told us how much we'd get, what the CO2 limit was (the Mazda was fine) and to order them ASAP if we we're opting out of the more common company car list.

So I didn't risk buying it in case they turned around said we're not paying for that as it doesn't match the criteria, so I went and picked up a Mini. Which is a great car, don't get me wrong, but I really loved the MX5 on the test drives.

Fingers crossed it's not a leap in price over what the 3/5's were going for, I might manage a straight swap with the Mini..

1.5 and 2.0 is the line-up, according to Autocar.
They have an early review today of the 1.5, and love it...

If I were you, I'd pop down your local Mazda dealer sharpish. I'm sure that most of them will take £500 deposit off you for a registration order.

This would work in a similar to way the Lotus garage where I used to be employed did it when the original Elise came out. £500 puts you on the waiting list. If when the brochure comes out or after a test drive, you no longer fancy it then you get your £500 back and everyone else below moves up one. If you do want it, then all you do is confirm your specification and wait until you get one of the first ones off the line.

If you are serious it might be worth giving that some thought. When the Elise came out the demonstrator and salesman started at 08-30 on the Saturday morning and he finished at 21.00. By the end of the first week he had registration deposits for over 200 cars.
Again, IF & that's one of those gigantic "if"'s that appear in giant stone letters at the beginning of biblical epics, its as good as everyone says it is the same could happen with the new MX-5.

Remember as well that was in the days before Top Gear. If Clarkson and Co rave about it as much as Autocar/Auto Express seem to, then you could be looking at very long waiting list indeed. Oh and don't forget that under EU rules Mazda UK can only bring in a certain number of cars a year.

When they are gone, they will be gone...

I like the idea of a mk4, but tbh the lack of hard folding roof is holding me back - car often lives outside in London.

Most reports suggest late summer before we get the car in the uk. Probably pop down and have a look when they do land but no rush really, current car is still great plenty of life left in it yet.

That makes sense The Hypno Toad, something I'll have to consider for sure.

Although, I may also wait for a folding hardtop, as on the NC I think that was a fantastic feature. My Mini will only be a year old when the ND is released so I'm really in no rush.

Given that this is the MOST PH of all PH cars, where's the Pistonheads review?

The Top Gear review will be on Sunday 8th. It's Hammond driving and is supposedly very positive.

Might be time to head down the dealers with that £500....

Mazda to be featured manufacturer at the Festival Of Speed.

Expect MX-5/787/CX-3 based giant sculpture outside the house then!

More importantly I would also imagine this will be the first time we get to see the ND MX-5 in action in the UK. Will be interesting to see what Mazda have got planned for the Thursday for people who have already put down deposits.

Had a proper nosey around the car at Geneva, was told the UK cars were landing in September although I didn't ask about engine options. Here's some photos; have to say I absolutely loved it, great-looking car and a very nice place to sit.

This link suggests the 2.0 will make 155bhp. Slightly disappointing if I'm honest

So 3bhp less than the UK mk3 with a bit more torque and about 100kgs less weight than the old soft top, can't see that being too bad. Though the redline being 1k less than the old 2.0 might disappoint some, the 1.5 revs more. The original 2.0 I have doesn't rev as well as the later ones but to be honest compared to downsized boosted modern units which are mostly dead by 6k its still not too bad.
