Hi again this is directed at the usual experts of blown Mx 5's.
My HSK turbo equiped engine gets fed oil from the pressure sensor and then into the dipstick hole to return to the sump. I dont like this setup and want the return to feed back through the blanked off stub that is located just below the oil filter.
Any reason why not please?

The 'accepted' way to do it is to drill and tap the sump, then you can run a nice short, large diameter line straight down from the turbo.

The bung route is the std for the old 1.6 Greddy kits but the hose barb tapped into the hub was an improvement on that.

Thanks lads some points to consider here.
When tapping into the sump the risk of swarf getting into the engine is too high but if the sump is removed at any time i can do it then.
Meanwhile I will use the existing blanked off hole beside the filter.

I have purchased a Mocal oil cooler system and am in the process of fitting it.

Am also using the heater pipes as additional cooling by running them through a front mounted rad as my kit car has no heater.

I found with the Greddy method, it was nigh on impossible to maintain a fall from the bottom of the the turbo, around the front of the engine to the stub. Consequently, oil occasionally backs up (particularly under braking) and you get a puff of blue smoke as the oil burns. Not great. I eventually tapped the sump. It is a bit scary, but with patience, a good quantity of grease on the drill bit (frequently wiped off)you'll soon be through. You can drain off your oil before drilling and then pour some thin oil / cleaner through to flush out an swarf.

After this mod, I have a return line which is almost vertical and very short.

Like this.

But we had the engine out to fit the Turbo, so swarf wasn't an issue

Its really not. Plenty of people have done it, as long as you follow the accepted method it will be fine. I.E - greased up 'christmas tree' or step drill bit, nice and slow, then drop the oil.

Mine looks just like the one above except I used stainless/teflon hose not rubber.

Hi folks, not been on for a day or two.

With your expert advice and experience I think I will drill the sump and do a proper job.
Believe it or not but my job is a toolmaker so drilling metal is err what I am supposed to be good at!

I assumed that the 19 mm bore hose round the front of the engine would take all the oil safely away.

Have a search on miataturbo.net there's a section in the FAQs I think with all the info and guides on drilling the sump successfully.

The bore of the pipe is not the issue, 19mm is ample. The problem is maintaining a fall.
