Best MPG anybody?
Discussion
I managed an average of 44.3 mpg on Saturday. Running a 2003 1.8i MX5.
I thought at first maybe I'd miscalculated but initially got to the petrol station 0.4 miles after the light came on. Filled up with 20 quid of Shell 95 @ 129.9p a litre. That worked out as 15.4 litres of fuel- 3.387528 UK gallons.
On which I then drove 16 miles to work and back which is mostly 30 and 40 roads with some town driving and waiting at lights. Then a 125 mile round trip on mostly the M25 and A3, albeit with some town driving either end and some B roads. Then later that evening 9 miles to an event and back on 30 roads but at a quieter time of night. The fuel light finally came on again 150 miles after fuelling up.
The whole day was spent not getting anywhere very fast trying to hold 50-55 mph on the motorways and A roads, using the tiniest prod of throttle at all times, taking the racing line across wide open roundabouts and lifting a lot. Literally took me about a minute to reach 55 from pulling away.
Has anybody achieved better mpg and what can these cars realistically do? Normally I'm pretty enthusiastic with my driving style but was hell bent on doing the whole day on £20!

I was extremely happy to get into the 40s. But it wasn't a perfect drive. I imagine that maybe I could have eeked out a bit more if I had fueled up at a motorway station and then spent the whole day on the motorway doing 50-55 rather than round town at all.
I think mine averages around 34 with normal driving so I was just impressed to see such a big increase. 10 extra miles per 10(?) gallons that are available (?). That's 100 miles difference on a full tank?

My best apparently was 44mpg. Must have been on a slow motorway cruise back from somewhere. Usually get around 32mpg
