Had a test drive today, so awesome, feels like a race car compared to my 1.2 fiesta.

Only one MAJOR issue though. My knees are banging on the steering wheel. Im only 5 foot 7 inches, if I put the seat all the way back it feels like the pedals are too far and im pressing them with my toes which im not used to at all.

Are there any things I can do to a MK2.5 (Montana) to make it work for me? I dont really want to get rid of my wheel because its adds character to the car, one of the reasons why I like it.

I'm 6'2" and had the same issue in my 2.5 There are a couple of options you can remove some of the padding in the seat base which will drop you down giving more knee room. There's a various guides around just google mx5 foamectomy.
Or you can do what I did and fit different seats, I went for series 2 Elise seats which dropped me down far enough that even my lanky legs clear the steering wheel.

Moutning a (fixed) bucket seat on the floor and doing away with runners will do wonders. Also a detachable steering wheel will make it much easier getting in and out.

I fitted a smaller steering wheel to my 1991 MX5 when I had the same problem....

Drivers seat has to be on adjustable runners to pass an MOT

according to this

http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_620.htm

this is the reason for rejection

"3.The driver’s seat fore and aft adjustment mechanism not functioning as intended.
"

so as long as you have replaced the mechanism completely with a fixed bucket seat it will be functioning as intended, though I am just some bod on the interwebs so check with an actual mot tester
