Yesterday evening i fitted a Pipercross foam panel filter to my 2.0 NC. As the weather was pretty dull i decided to leave the test drive till this mornings commute to work.

The car started and idled no problem at all, however during the first run with the new filter i encountered a problem.

As i was accelerating up through the gears all seemed fine, (it actually felt slightly more responsive) until i got into forth gear. As the revs rose in forth the engine all of a sudden lost power, akin to taking your foot completely off the throttle.

I backed off and drove on to work very gingerly not wanting to cause any harm parked up and left the car until it was time to return home.

I approached the drive home with caution but it went without a hitch, the car accelerated and pulled hard in every gear without any sign of problems.

My questions to those with more knowledge then me are.

1. Could the problem i encountered have been caused by the sudden change in airflow, air/fuel mixture where the ecu has to learn the new settings?

2. Could it be that the engine just doesn't like the new filter?

3. Or could it just be a coincidence that this problem occurred after i put in the new filter and is completely unrelated, therefore a different problem altogether?

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Garry

Probably a coincidence but it is a suspicious one. A filter panel change is going to make next to no difference as far as the ECU is concerned. Check what you have done and make sure you haven't left anything loose/unplugged or knocked something lose.

Gary,

it could be caused by the air filter replacement as the MAF may need re-scalling for a change in airflow but it is probably more likely you have disturbed something.

If the engine is running leaner you may induce detonation and the ECU then uses a high detonation fuelling and timing map to run the car.

The ECU will only really 'learn in closed loop mode so anything over 75% throttle could cause problems.

If you are struggling you could drop us an email - we can diagnose your problems

I've never heard of MAF rescaling... there are no moving parts and no adjustments...

ETA: I don't know anything about the Mk3 engine though.
