Hi guys I'm new round here but have a question.(Assuming this is similar to the TVR forums where everybody posts their issues and hopes those with more experience of the car can help).

I'm getting this noise from the rear of the car under hard acceleration in 4th gear, sometimes 3rd and 5th too, when the revs really pick up- say 4k +. The noise itself is sort of a light grinding/metallic jingle, sounding like it's coming from the rear left.

To accompany this there is a scrubbing/grumbling sound when cornering hard. My first thought was the diff.

There is also something vibrating/exhaust blowing when the car is thoroughly warmed that is excited at 900rpm from the rear of the car which I haven't checked out yet.

Could all 3 be related? Has anyone had any experience of this?

I would say I'm mildly confident with working on the front end of a car (currently doing an engine out on the TVR) but I've never done anything further back than the prop shaft, apart from removing things like ARBs.

Any help would be great! Alex

if you're lucky it's a heatshield. If not, then you might be able to help the noise by taking your car to a specialist MX5 place and getting them to align the gearbox and diff

Otherwise, (like for most other people) then it tends just to be a feature of the car. it's annoying but it won't break. i thought it was the clutch, as when i dipped the clutch the noise stopped. so soon after i bought the car, i got it changed. Didn't fix it, but it was only Mr Clutch and i'm not sure whether they bothered changing the bearings etc.

many years later, i changed flywheel, clutch, and diff, all to 1.8 items, and i have no more grindy noise. but it's a very expensive solution if you don't need to upgrade.

The "metallic jingle" does sound like the heat shield is the most likely culprit
