So, after running out of pads and consequently buggering the discs at Bedford back in February i decided to get the TurboGroove and Greenstuff package from MX5 Parts. Very nice and very pretty to look at.Done a taster sesh at the PH SS at Silverstone and was a bit disappointed to find they were absolute pants despite having a good few hundred miles of bedding in.
Fast forward to today and, after covering a decent number of road miles since SS, i set about Abingdon for a damn good thrashing! brakes were as good as non existent, got a bit better with some heat in them but generally not inspirational to ones confidence. At the end if the day the front pads had disappeared and rears are almost gone.
Couple of things here,

has anyone experienced the same and would a different pad work with the EBC discs and if so which pads. Previously had standard discs with Mintex pads and they lasted me about 6 trackdays.

one for you Lazza as i know the power of your MX and your infinate knowledge;)

I've got EBC yellowstuff with standard discs (from autolink) on my mk1 BBR turbo and they worked really well, especially when hot, at Oulton park and Brands Hatch. They don't seem to be wearing particularly quickly either. What brake fluid are you running?

Read this before on a few forums, I think simply put there isn't much that is a significant upgrade from original pads and discs, and if anything a step down.

Similar situation HJ, we completely fooked a set of Mintex pads and grooved discs at Keevil last Nov. (never seen the metal backing fuse around the piston......)
Currently on standard discs and more Mintex pads which seem a reasonable combination but not tested to extremes recently.
The thing which impressed us however was that despite the extreme temp. the Castrol React fluid did not boil or lose pedal.
Bought it from these guys

Reports on ANOther forum I frequent seem to indicate Green Stuff are a bit hit and miss in terms of performance.
HTH.
Cheers, Pewe.

cheers for the replies men, Ive bought a set of Minty's today and will couple these with the turbogroove discs. If these dont perform then it will be back to the standard discs and accept the fact that Mazda got it right from the outset.

Tried all sorts. IMO Ditch the silly grooved discs they offer zero benefit.

Cheap pattern part plain discs and genuine Mazda pads and a good bleed is all the brakes you will need short of competitive motors port.

Greenstuff were never really meant for track, you'd have been better off with yellow.

Better still, mintex m1144 or axxiss ultimate both come at a good performance point for the money.

Above that, carbotech or carbon lorraine. I wouldn't want to pay for those and have slotted discs eat them up!

As everyone has said and you have found, they are an expensive waste. The Greenstuff are iffy at best and poor at worst. Quality control seems to be all over the place with them but either way they are road only pads. Yellowstuff (which to be fair are decent) are their track pads. I had the Turbogroove discs on my old Mk1 and hated them. They were noisy, I could feel them through the brake pedal and they made no noticable improvement to the braking.

On my current car I use the cheapest plain discs I can find. I match them with the best pads I can find, Axxis ULT if I can find them.

I had those discs and red stuff on my old 200sx. I've never had such ste brakes on a car before. I took them off and had them skimmed as they had warped somehow (never been near a track) and they warped again.

Removed them and fitted a bog standard set of brembo vented discs and ferodo pads and the difference was night and day. I would wager the same will apply on the mx5.

I will say though that i have greenstuff on my car that came on it 4 years ago and they have seen 2 open pit lane track days, and airfield day and two spirited drives to Spa and Le mans and they still have loads of meat on and perform well! Kind of echoes the comments about QC!

Thanks for all the input fellas,

Now got mintex all round on the TG discs, they do stop rather sharp-ish,,!!!! I'll see how these bed in and if the discs rip the pads to bits.

Out of interest, has anyone ever sheared the head off the slide bolt on the front carrier, and if so how long before it undone itself leading to catastrophic disastereekyikes

I was considering upgrading to the EBC grooved disks but will think again based on this feed back. I run my Mk3 on Mintex pads but did upgrade to braded SSteel brake lines and they make a hugh difference on trackday work and hard road driving with much more positive pedal feel.Obvisously good quality brake fluid is essential but the price of braded lines is a great improvement at a fairly low cost. Well worth the outlay in my mind.

mk1's benefit from master cylinder brace too. fairly easy to do if you've got the standard yellow strut brace across the engine.
