I fitting a new cambelt to my 95 1.8, but I'm stumped at a really easy bit - refitting the alternator belt.

I can't undo the pivot bolt, even with the inlet manifold support out, but i can move the alternator with a big bar and a hammer.

So I've got 4 of the 4-rib belts laying around, and one of them MUST have come off the car - 855 , 870 , 925 , 955. The 870 is too small even with the alternator right up against the block, and the 925 seems too big and the bracket won't adjust that far.

Is it possible to assemble it wrong or something? I can't see how it's now not fitting. I spent an hour today trying to get it right and unless I am going completely mad, none of the belts fit, which is completely baffling.

What length should the alternator belt be?

Pretty sure Mine is a 844! And that's a 97 1.8. Will confirm tomorrow as I am getting her out.

Maybe something is not back place properly?

844? I can't see how that would come close to fitting - even the 870 won't fit around with the alternator pressed up against the engine block.

I think there must be another belt laying around the car somewhere....I found the 855 trapped between the new radiator and the ARB, I wonder if there's yet another belt in there somewhere.

I think I'm going to have to remove the inlet manifold to free up the stuck alternator nut, but of course all the nuts on that are inaccessible too. Ugh, my old 1.6 was much easier to work on, I replaced the whole engine in an afternoon, the 1.8 is fighting me at every step.

This is my punishment for taking it apart and then not putting it back together for over a month.

try this

particularly the bit about loosening the bolts, especially the third one behind the altenator onthe drivers side. If you do not undo them you can snap the adjuster bolt.

the power steering belt is in front of the altenator belt.

Yeah thats part of the problem - the bottom bolt is stuck fast and I can only move the alternator by hitting it with a hammer.
Anyhow, the inlet manifold is now finally off (at the cost of some skin) so I should be able to finally free that stuck bolt.

Also found that the injector seals were in pieces, and some moron had stuck the inlet gasket on with a load of black silicone which is now all over the place, even down the sides of the injectors themselves. All in all it's a right mess and so needs a good cleanup.

i think that's the cam cover gasket you're refering to, which can benefit from a little silicon in the corners. fairly easy job to whip it off. good luck clearing it all out tho, you really don't want that stuff floating round your engine...

as for alternator belt, it's it a v? the power steering is a 4-rib...

anyway, how comes you can't under the pivot bolt? get some leverage on there, breaker bar or something, or you might end up shearing a bolt when you come to adjust it up.

No, not the rocker gasket , the inlet manifold gasket, which is covered in black silicone for some stupid reason, and its all inside the inlet ports and all over the injectors...

The alternator pivot bolt is stuck fast, and on the 1.8 there's almost no room to get in there with any form of socket. Anyhow, with the inlet manifold off I can get the breaker bar on it now, so I hope it can now be released finally and I can start cleaning up all the mess.

Fortunate timing. I have a 1.8, how the diddly fk do you get the inlet manifold off? I can't for the life of me figure out what's holding it but mine is stuck fast. I'm at least a dozen bolts in, but still nothing!

Ahh sorry completely misread.

I think I managed to get a ring spanner on the back side of the pivot bolt and a breaker bar on the front side

Well, there are the row of nuts across the top, then a row underneath, there is the support brace under the manifold that bolts on to the block near the oil filter. Aside from those I think it's just cables, clips, hoses etc.. I dont think there were any other bolts.

Mind you, if it's like mine then some muppet has poured a litre of silicone sealant in to stick it to the cylinder head rage , so it might take a good amount of force to unstick it (or the big rubber hammer).

Anyone know what this plastic thing is for? In keeping with how well the rest of this task has gone, this thing fell out from somewhere when I removed the inlet manifold, but I've no idea what it could be for.

Spacer for the injector rail to bolt to the inlet manifold.

Thanks, and luckily I've found the other 2 laying on the subframe...phew.

One injector has a melted end, so that's got to be replaced, the other 3 look OK now that I've scraped the black silicone from them. Ordered a complete new set of seals also as the old ones mostly came out in little pieces. Judging from the amount of silicone I can only assume that someone glued the seals, injectors and inlet manifold in place with a whole tube of the stuff, although I've no idea WHY anyone would do that.

Sheer blind incompetency. I've done so many silly things that I thought were right when gaining experience with the spanners

Thanks for the tip on the manifold. Found the errant bolt that was holding it in. smile
