Hi All,

I've got a NA 1.6 Eunos.

Although the car is normally aspirated, it does bring out the hooligan in me; so the clutch tends to get a bit of abuse (mainly to induce slides in 2nd) and is now on it's last legs. There are some organic/stage 1 kits on mx5 parts which are out of my budget, but I know that a 1.8 clutch can be fitted if the flywheel is changed over.

I suppose what I'm basically asking is; will the standard Exedy 1.8 clutch withstand much more abuse over the equivalent 1.6 clutch? If so, is it worth the extra ~£50 or will a 1.6 clutch still put up with a lot of abuse?

The MX5 clutches are pretty puny and undersized affairs. Not take much abuse so if you don't want to abuse it go for something uprated or buy a spare plate as the flywheel and cover plate don't seem to suffer much wear even when the friction plate is well past its sell buy date.

Only the 1.6. The 1.8 clutch is fine and can be fitted to the 1.6 with a flywheel swap. Mine is still running the stock Mazda 1.8 clutch (whatever it is they used, fitted in 2003 as a warranty replacement due to judder on the original) despite having well over 200bhp (242bhp currently) for nearly 10 years.
