My Second dip in MX5 ownership
Discussion
I had a MK1 until around December last year when I sold it to my Dad and bought a sensible BMW E46 330ci. Unfortunately, the BMW bored me and I couldn't even rest my hat on the fact it was more practicable because I don't drive to work or have any need for a comfortable motorway cruiser. Anyway Insurance was up for renewal at the end of April so I decided it was time to swap back to a good old mx5 and I started shopping around.
I came across a MK1"Classic" which looked pretty much perfect so I bought it for what I think was an absolute steal.
Spec (that I've found so far) includes:
1.8
Torsen (not sure if 1 or 2) LSD
Larini Exhaust
No ABS
No Airbag
Rear Cage
Bilstein Suspension from a MK2.5
Hard Top
Central Locking/Toad Alarm
Windbreak with speakers.
I'm absolutely chuffed with it I must say. The car feels much more planted than my previous mx5 which felt pretty good itself. I think the bilsteins probably play some part in this but most of it maybe geometry.
The only plans I've got at the moment are possibly to fit chassis rails and maybe swap the steering wheel for a classic spoked design (moto lita type). I've had one in a few previous cars and I don't know why but I just prefer the feel. I've always thought a change of steering wheel can completely change a car's character. I swapped from a wooden moto lita in an MGB GT I had to a nice chunky leather bound wheel and I instantly felt sportier. Nice placebo effect there!
The other thing I've been quite surprised by is how different the car feels on the brakes without ABS. The pedal feels a lot firmer and I must say I prefer it. All in all, I'm a very happy chappy!
Planning on a drive through Wales with a couple of friends in a week or two so I will return with more exciting pictures then!
