I'm going to put the new cambelt etc.. on my 94 1.8 at the weekend - I had a 1.6 and it managed to cope with about 12 degrees of advance and it felt more torquey in the lower revs, so does the same thing work on a 1.8?

Yes. Its not as much difference as 1.6 but is is a small midrange torque gain and its free so why not? 14 degrees should be absolutely fine.
