After driving my car my mate would like to buy a Mk1 MX5. He would prefer one that has not been welded and is immaculate. He would also prefer a late Car, and an import with Air con. The air con is important as he spends a fair amount of time in the South of France.

So maybe a 94 onwards 1.6 or 1.8 import, in immaculate condition. I have looked in the usual places but nothing exceptional has come up....

Anyone suggest where to look?

Either you keep checking all the usual car sales sites and wait.

Or I suspect dandy cars could get you one, but you'll pay for the service....

Thanks. I have had a look on Dandy cars... he may go and have a look... A lot of the nice ones seem to be Auto, and he wants a manual.

the search is on...!

I have one for sale 1.8, 1994, no rust. Has air con but no longer works.

Another thumbs up for Goodwood Sports Cars. They have some fresh Japanese imports, they seem to be immaculate.

Hi.
I'm the guy who runs Goodwood Sportscars.
Its becoming surprisingly difficult to find really good MX5s, especially when you consider the numbers produced. I'm not saying that they don't exist but you have to fight your way through lots of rust buckets first.

For this reason, we (me and AK Automotive, MX5 specialists in the North East) are importing good examples from Japan. Condition - especially of the undersides - is just ridiculously good and they have superb rustfree bodywork.

Its not necessarily going to be the cheapest way of buying an MX5 but our cars are some of the best out there.

Advert over!

MX5 nutz is probably one of the best places for well looked after MK1 at good prices.
They tend to have been modified though, some tastefully some not.

I found that good MK2 are even harder to find: the enthusiast forums like MX5 nutz and the importers like Goodwood seem to prefer the Mk1 so most of the Mk2 or Mk2.5 you will find will be the "1 lady owner" type which generally means driven carefully but never serviced or had basic maintenance like having drains holes regularly cleaned.

As a result most of them are rust buckets, in particular the much dreaded front chassis rails.
It's also quite shocking how fast the rust situation can deteriorate, I bought my Mk2 a couple of months ago with sills that looked and felt very good appart from a bubble or two, and the rot has progressed outside at an alarming pace since then - granted it's been raining almost every day for 6 weeks.
