I know everybody is obsessed with going sideways, but has anybody got any recommendations for a tyre that performs well day to day in a mixture of conditions. My current rears on my mk1 could do with changing based on age and im looking around at various options....

I put a set of Kumho SPT tyres on mine mk3. Very pleased with them.

I was actually considering starting a thread along similar lines as I'm considering tyre choices for an upgrade from my current tyres.
My current tyres are actually Uniroyal Rainsport 2s and while I'm very happy with the grip levels they produce and they are definitely a very good tyre for the price (£35 or so from camskill.co.uk in 195/50/15) I'm starting to become a bit tired of the slight lack in feel and feedback I'm getting compared to the Toyo T1R's I had before. However I'm definitely of the opinion that they have higher grip levels than the Toyo's especially in the wet.

I've just fitted 4 Dunlop Bluresponse tyres 195/50/15 after reading some good reviews (probably Auto Express or similar).

Seem pretty good so far, loads more grip than my worn T1R's, and they are very quiet (about 67dB I think)

Do miss the slidey rear end on a wet roundabout on the T1R's though! whistle

Hankook V12 Evo are great on Mrs Lazzas Mini Cooper S and Michelin Energy Saver were outstanding on my Focus.
On the MX5 however I've never found anything that matched the Goodyear F1 gsd3 which you can't get now or the Bridgestone S02 which went years ago. I'm running Toyo T1R at the moment which aren't bad for budget tyres but I'm sure there's better out there.

I have the Hankook V12 Evo's on my diesel Astra, and don't think too highly of them.

When looking at replacements for my MX5 I was going to replace the Toyos with Toyos, but they don't seem to have been improved/developed for years, whereas other manufacturers are improving or bringing out new versions regularly.

I quite like my Michelin pilot exalto 2. These are now getting replaced by pilot sport 3 which from initial feedback seem good too.

Well the current set on mine are Pirelli P6000 and whilst being fine in the dry they do seem to be pretty poor in the wet (this is backed up by other reviews ive seen). I was leaning towards something from Toyo to be honest.

I've got a set of Rainsport 3 on my Mk2 and have been happy with them.
I find the grip very good, maybe even a little too good in the wet. It takes a lot of provocation to bring the tail out.
I haven't had a chance to try them on snow or ice though, but to be honest I probably wouldn't drive the mx5 in those conditions as most of the roads around where I live are very narrow with cars parked on either side.

Oh and also they are ridiculously cheap from Camskill, I think I paid £33 per corner ( 15s )

Pilot sport 3 isexcellent in the dry, as you expect, but also very good in the wet as long as not massive puddles ( like for the last 4 months). In normal wet conditions the compound keeps up the grip very well.

Poor in snow though not helped by the tread pattern.

To be fair any summer tyre is pretty crap in the snow. Even more so on an mx5!

I'm going for Rainsports for my MK2 when my Toyo T1Rs need replacing. I've got Rainexperts on my MK1 and they have been brilliant in the cold and wet weather so far this winter.

Well ive decided to give the the Dunlop Sport Bluresponse tyres a go, used blackcircles.com to get them booked in for a fitting at the garage round the corner, on friday morning. I know they arent a usual choice for an mx5 but im happy to give them a go. Its my first rear wheel drive car and having only passed 2 and a bit years ago, any tyre that helps keep the back end in check in the wet can't be a poor choice.

It certainly won't be touching a track until it gets the suspension refreshed anyway, if im honest it seems a little tyred.. (really poor joke, but its an appropriate thread so!) biggrin

Toyo T1Rs get good reviews apart from in the wet. Had them on my old car and they were fine in sun and rain. However I have proper winter tyres so swap them over for the 6 months of snow, smile
