A friend is emigrating to Australia. He has offered me his mx5. It's a 1.8, 6 speed on an 03 plate, 50k on the clock.

The car has been off road for the past 18 months. It's looking a little sorry for itself, battery flat etc etc. he has arranged for it to be recovered to a garage. I'll pay the repairs and the car is mine. Does anyone think this deal can work, or am I mad to even consider it?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated....

Can't lose. Get it running and it'll do for a while. If it's problematic break it for parts and flog them on e-Bay (or build a kit car).

As above. Get them to check the front chassis rails for rust though. If it's clean you are on to a winner.

It's free, of course it's a good opportunity. You have nothing to loose, if it's in awful condition, sell it for spares or repairs.

If it's only going to cost a few £££ to sort then you have a nice mx for very little.

If I've read your post correctly I think you should be cautious about allowing the garage to re-commission the car without giving you a firm price.
Depending on how it's been stored there may be quite a few items which have gone u/s.
HTH.
Cheers, Pewe.

even if it's a lemon, you could break it for a grand easy, if you can be bothered.
for me, that's a no-brainer. i'd drop a little oil into the cylinders and turn the engine over without plugs, then fresh oil, fresh brake fluid, new battery, pump up the tyres, and you're good to go smile

My current car was off the road for 2 years before I bought it, drove it straight to Halfords to get MOT'd after i purchased it expecting it to fail on a bunch and become a project... failed on 2 cracked rear tyres! 2 days later after purchasing tyres online it became my daily driver!

Looks like this is not happening. Mechanic says £1.5k, as conservative estimate!

Rust, electrics, exhaust, wheels, mould and so on. I'm quite disappointed. Have been looking at the classifieds for something similar.

Wheels?

Could you not do some of it yourself to bring the price down?
